Wild Sunflowers

Every year at this time the prairie comes alive with native sunflowers.

Roadside ditches, along driveways, in open fields and pastures – anywhere there’s room, they burst forth into bright cheery yellow.

It’s like a last wildflower hurrah before winter.

Kitty is enjoying the sunflowers too.

Well, maybe not, but she is enjoying the lovely fall weather.

It won’t be much longer before winter sets in, and so these days we’re taking as much time as possible to be outside with the sunflowers.

Hope these add some sun to your day.

THANKS! I have been wondering what those were up here in Iowa. I see them EVERYWHERE. 🙂

      Hi Kristin,
The wild sunflowers are having a great year here. There are several different varieties from knee high to up over my head, and they all bloom at the same time.

It has been cloudy and rainy since last week. These sunflowers did warm me up. Thanks! Pretty sunflowers btw.

Well those are pretty. I’ve never seen them or knew they
existed. Learn something new everyday. Thanks. For the
sunshine too – we need it here this morn. Gloomy out.

  6. Lovely photos! How pretty and wonderful to have those popping up everywhere! I am seriously jealous! What a great time of year…I am assuming the weather has cooled off a bit for you guys over there. It finally rained for us yesterday…all day…one of those very slow rains…felt like I was back in Seattle!

      Hi Bonnie,
Really cooled off here. Been just wonderful with highs in the 70s, and lows in the 50s. Perfect. Glad to hear you finally got some rain there. Refreshes the soul too.

We are also seeing a lot of purple gayfeather or liatris blooming right now–with the yellow sunflowers in the background–they are divine!! Glad you missed the 9 inches of rain!! YIKES! Too much for anyone at once–I’m sure they would all like to be planting wheat too! Hope it didn’t wash anyone out!

    • Suzanne says:

      Hi Melanie,
We don’t get much gayfeather here, but I used to see it a lot when I lived in Missouri. Yes, the 9 inches of rain did cause some flooding to the south of us. Crazy.

How could these yellow splashes of color not brighten anyone’s day? To think, they grow wild! What a blessing.
