Coyote in Rocky Mountain National Park

Last Friday afternoon on our visit to Rocky Mountain National Park, we saw a coyote standing in a field in Beaver Meadow. We stayed in our truck so we wouldn’t disturb him, and I hung out the window straining against my seat-belt to take his picture. When I got back home, I picked this one, and removed an ugly survey marker in photoshop.

But then I thought maybe you might enjoy seeing the picture before the edit,

because look what he did next:

Not sure what was going on here. My guess is that he is young and was just playing with the marker. After he chewed on it for a while, he let it go, he trotted away.

We enjoyed seeing such a beautiful animal up close, even though his behavior wasn’t strictly National Geographic.

Cattle, corn, wheat, beans, mud, snow, ice, and drought. Plenty of fresh air and quiet. Our life is sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes joyous, but never boring.

What a pretty coyote; we see them occasionally here in the Bay Area. Playing with the survey marker–I’d not seen that before! aren’t road trips the best?!~!

  2. From the last few posts it looks like you had a spectacular visit. Great photos of the true nature.

  3. Oh my gosh, that coyote was definitely testing out the taste of that marker…it could’ve been a tasty snack…darn! I get so excited when I see wildlife in person, I know you must have loved it!

      Hi Bonnie,
I had my seat belt on and the coyote was almost behind us, and I was reaching out the truck and I about strangled myself in the process. What I won’t do to take pics.

  4. Wow, Suzanne! Beautiful shots of a beautiful animal. Thanks!

You probably have those critters roaming all over your farm. Anyway we do.

    Great photos, by the way.

      Hi Julie,
We have a lot of coyotes here in northeast KS. They howl and yip yip to each other at night and all the coyotes in the neighborhood join in. Makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck, but I love it.
