Feeding Hay To The Cattle

The other day Harland headed out to feed hay to the cattle, and I tagged along. I stood at the edge of the lot, and the younger cows came over to look at me and take a drink of water.

Of course if one cow gets a drink, everyone else just has to get a drink too.

Harland brought over 2 large bales of hay.

His appearance was greeted by lots of drooling.

Cows seem to have an excess of drool. Anyway, he drove into the lot,

stopped near a hay hoop, removed the webbing from the bales,

and then dumped each bale into a hay hoop.

The hoops keep the cows from trampling and laying in the hay. Once the hay gets dirty, the cattle won’t eat it.  (Harland put up the hay last June, and you can see that post here.)

Then Harland drove the tractor back to the barn, thinking deep thoughts along the way.

” I wonder if we should repaint the bathroom.”

“I’m kinda partial to Linen White. Or maybe Eggshell….”

Cattle, corn, wheat, beans, mud, snow, ice, and drought. Plenty of fresh air and quiet. Our life is sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes joyous, but never boring.

Happy New Year, Suzanne and Harland.

Loved the Pony Creek photos. Such a sweet little stream.
The cattle look like they are wintering well.

I just love the picture of your drooling cow with the mohawk! So cute! My two bovine are doing a good job of wasting their hay. I’m going to have to find a hay hoop before next year. At least the snow melted and they are eating off the cornfield again!

These pics are great for a city slicker like me!
I see those humongous haybales in the fields, but now I can see how they get moved around and used! Thanks for the great pics! Has Harland decided on the Linen White or Eggshell? LOL!

The only time I was in Kansas it was summer. 104 degrees. I just love seeing how it is right now and how different. 87 degrees here and settling in for the southern summer. Kerry

In response to Kerry Hand, I hope you get back to Kansas some day when it is NOT 104. When the air conditioning is not working and you’ve been driving a few hours you can get downright loopy unless you stop and cool off. Right Suzanne?
I have a better opinion of Kansas now that I’ve made more trips there in better weather. Enjoy your summer!

      Hi Glenda,
Geez, will some people never forgive me for driving them across KS to CO in a 1993 Dodge Intrepid with no air conditioning in 104 degree heat? 🙂

I LOVE cow pictures. I was in 4H as a kid, my first beef steer was Max, a black angus! Keep up the great photography and Happy New Year to you and your family!

  8. Ok, that was so funny about what Harland was thinking. What I think he was really thinking was…”I wonder what Suzanne will be making for dinner tonight…I hope she’s making those mile high biscuits…oh ya, and we could put some of that plum jelly on ’em!” yum!! anyhow, I love the photo of the younger cows that all had to come over for a drink of water! That is so adorable! They are so cute! How can you resist those faces?!
