Thinking Of Flowers

Now wind torments the field,
turning the white surface back
on itself, back and back on itself,
like an animal licking a wound.

Nothing but white–the air, the light;
only one brown milkweed pod
bobbing in the gully, smallest
brown boat on the immense tide.

A single green sprouting thing
would restore me. . . .

Then think of the tall delphinium,
swaying, or the bee when it comes
to the tongue of the burgundy lily.

Jane Kenyon 1947-1995

This poem perfectly matches our landscape of snow and ice today, and with more than a month of winter to go, I thought we could all use a little sunshine.

Have a great weekend!

Cattle, corn, wheat, beans, mud, snow, ice, and drought. Plenty of fresh air and quiet. Our life is sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes joyous, but never boring.

Love the sunflowers at this time of year. Good reminder that snow won’t last forever.

I love this poem! I can almost feel the wind and see the little dry brown pod on the ground. My neighbors iris’s are up and even in the cold wind it is nice to stop and see them. It reminds me that Spring will be here soon.

LOVE sunflowers, we grow them along our garden up next to our barn each year for our little girl. Thanks for reminding me spring is around the corner, having some serious cabin fever with this ice we are getting today.

  5. That’s a great poem. Winter can be long and hard, but it has it’s own beauty and I love that! I loved the mention of the milk weed pod.
