After 5 months of brown in the flowerbed near our front door, this cheerful herald of spring greeted us Saturday morning.

Crocuses are one of the earliest plants to bloom in the spring, often popping up through the snow. They can withstand the cold due to a waxy coating on their flowers and leaves.
