Our neighbor has a homemade small pond and stocked it with those large goldfish. One nice summer day I heard this great noise of wings landing and looked over the fence and a great blue heron was helping himself to the fish. The neighbor tried placing a net over the pond but when the bird came back he just picked out the fish like the net wasn’t there. LOL.
Hi Darlene,
That’s so funny. I’ve heard of herons doing that too.
I think these birds are neat to watch. Although a lot of people think they are pests since they do eat all those expensive fish out of everybodies landscaped ponds!!
My kids went crazy over these pictures. Herons look prehistoric when flying. You take the best pictures. I know I keep saying that but you do. I was given a camera for an early Mothers Day present. Yeah, a real camera now!!!
God Bless
Thanks Mary. I’d like to get a closer shot of the herons, but they are kinda skittish and hard to photograph. Kudos to you on the new camera. What fun you’ll have.
Blessings.
I once saw the opposite happen. A Great Blue Heron was wading through a pond at Big Island near Marion OH. A White Pelican (not common in Ohio) was swimming behind it and eating what the Heron stirred up.
Oh really? I’ll be. Never knew they did that. Thanks for sharing Elaine.
They are such beautiful and regal birds. I haven’t seen any around MBF, but have seen some down at Bosque del Apache… about an hour or so south of here.
Hi Justina,
Harland and I visited Bosque back about a year and a half ago. What a treasure that place is. You’re so lucky to live near it.
So nice to have a chance to watch the birds. Great pictures.
Herons are pretty cool. They are so big! That’ so cool that you got to photograph one! We have a heron that flys onto our property right down into our creek behind the house! It is such a sight to see. He never stay for very long…and if I dare to run and get my camera…forget it, not only will he be gone by the time I get back, but I will have missed the precious moments that he was here. only ever see him about two or three times the whole summer!
They are skittish and hard to photograph Bonnie. I got lucky on that one.
