Chocolate Date Bars
I copied this recipe out of my mom’s cookbook some years ago. I added chocolate chips.
I need chocolate. We all do. It’s necessary to our sanity.
And if you don’t like dates, that’s too bad. You’ll eat them or you don’t get to leave the table. Whoops, sorry, I’m channeling my mother. You can substitute raisins for the dates.
And if you or those you love have a nut allergy, just substitute coconut.
Anywho, here’s how to make Chocolate Date Bars.

Preheat oven to 325 degrees
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup confectioners sugar
- 1 tablespoon butter, melted
- 1/4 cup all purpose flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 cup chopped dates(may substitute raisins)
- 3/4 chopped nuts (may substitute coconut)
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips
Beat eggs with a whisk until frothy. Add sugar
and butter,
then blend well. Add flour,
salt,
and baking power.
Mix well. Stir in vanilla.
Add dates, nuts, and chocolate chips and mix with a wooden spoon (batter will be stiff).
Pour into a greased 8″ X 8″ pan.
Bake for 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool, cut into bars, and dust with confectioners sugar.
These are great for dessert. Or for breakfast. Or for a late night snack. Or in the middle of the night.
Or because you have a chocolate craving and chocolate is necessary for your sanity.

LOOKS delicious but unfortunately, I don’t care for chocolate or dates or raisns for that matter!
This looks yummy! I like chocolate & dates. Sometimes raisins, but I would definitely try it! I am not a baker, so now, if I can just get you to come and make it here at my house………..!
Don’t say you’re not a baker. You can make this – it’s so easy. Just mix it all together and throw in the oven. My motto is “if you can eat, you can cook” 🙂
Just realized I like raisins WITH chocolate! LOL!
And I love nuts! Guess I am one right now!
Being silly!
Yum! My husband loves anything with raisins AND nuts AND choc chips. I’ll give it a try!
P.S. So glad to see you have posted a recipe. Your Hermit cookies are a favorite at our house. Thanks so much.
Thank you Chester’s mom. It’s been a long time since I did any baking. I’ve missed sharing recipes with everyone. Up next is Apple Betty. I’ll have a post about that soon.
These are one of my favorite recipes too. Delicious every time.
Oh my!!! I could just eat one or two or three of those bars right now!! My taste buds have come alive looking at those yummy ingredients!
I like chocolate, but I think I would like these bars better the way your mom made them. I love dates and would want them to be the “star” in this recipe!
