Winter Moon

The full moon rose last night behind a large old mulberry tree at the edge of our pasture.

And this is our place.

From L to R:  There’s an old barn(with the security light), a small grain bin, the garden shed, and our house with the light in the downstairs window.

I considered lightening these images up, but hey, it was night, and this is what it looks like where we live: very dark, and we can see all the stars easily.

Did you catch the full moon last night?

(If you’re having trouble seeing  these images, view them in a dark room, let your eyes adjust to the dark, and I promise the pictures will come to life.)

To take pictures at night, put your camera on a tripod, attach a shutter release to your camera, turn your autofocus off and switch to manual, turn your image stabilization off, set your camera to aperture priority, your ISO to 125, and your aperture to 10. Set your LCD to live-view, manually focus on your subject, and then click the shutter release, being careful not to touch the camera or tripod while the shutter is open.

I know this might sound overwhelming if you’ve never done it before, but it’s not that hard, I promise. Questions? Just ask.

Thanks for the info on setting the camera up. I was in such a hurry I forgot most of that last night and then got frustrated. Pictures were just so so. Now I’ll have these notes to keep working on my night shots with!

I agree, no trouble seeing stars at your house Suzanne! It’s nice not to have really close neighbors!

Wow…that’s really dark! I’d love seeing the stars, and my hubby would enjoy using his telescope, but I’d have to get used to the darkness.

It’s just depends on what you’re used to. I grew up in the country, and when in town at night, I don’t like how bright it is. Give me a night in the country under a full moon any day.

These are great pictures. I’m in the country, but I’m not that dark. I can see the glow from Des Moines in the distance and there are security lights. It really was a beautiful moon, and no clouds to obscure it.

Nice shots! This morning I caught photos of the full moon in the western sky. And, just now saw it appear again this evening.

Great photographs. Thanks for the tutorial.

  8. The moon was amazing. I see it in the morning. One nice thing about being up early in the winter. Morning moonlight! I gotta try your night photography tip. Thanks.

Beautiful pictures. It really is dark! I am a city girl and there are always lights around. Just as the city seems so bright to you, the country seems so dark to me. Loved seeing where you live.

  10. It is amazing to see the nigh sky when you get out in the country, away from all the city lights.
Your moon pictures are beautiful. Did you by any chance see the moon this evening? It was massive and looked orange.

It was raining last night so we didn’t see the full moon. We were out walking in the rain. Phil got a new hat for Christmas that’s waterproof. It was funny how he showed me when he tipped his hat, the rain ran off it! It is nice to finally find the hat he’s been wanting for awhile. He like it, it’s an Australian River hat, not real, not made in Australia, but China…I know, just didn’t have $60 for a hat. But he likes it and I have a couple funny photos of him with the hat I need to post one of these days. Thanks for sharing your view of the moon and your farm. Thanks for sharing the way to photograph at night. I will try it sometime. Bye!

What a lovely picture of the moon rising behind the Mulberry tree! Your farm looks so peaceful. I love living in the country with no lights or traffic. I couldn’t live anywhere else. The stars are so beautiful in the dark country night. Thank you for the tutorial, I will have to try it soon. We have been enjoying the full moon here, too. I wish I had a Mulberry tree! xx

  13. I love photos like this! So beautiful You did a great job on these. The moon has really been beautiful these past couple of nights and early mornings!! I just love a full moon on a clear night!

Ah….how pretty your little country home is. I saw the full moon too BUT as it was setting this morning as I was pulling out of my driveway to go to work. It was still twilighty and very pretty. Makes me wish for wide open spaces and less neighbors (they are right on top of us)here in the big city.

Love the pictures! It looks lovely where you live. I can’t wait to try this. I’ve never had much luck with night photography and now I am inspired. Thanks for the photo lesson.
