Barns In The Snow

Old barns somehow look their best in new fallen snow.

Below, a pile of old bricks stands near an old barn. Probably they were saved when the old home that once stood here was torn down.

Most old barns stood near houses, but many of the houses are now gone, leaving the barns alone on the prairie. Barns were once hubs of activity. Hay was stored here. Farm animals took shelter here. Barn cats prowled the hayloft.

The silence of old barns now is almost painful. One by one, they will eventually go the way of the houses that once stood near them.

But for now they provide a link to an earlier time on the prairie, and food for our imagination.

Cattle, corn, wheat, beans, mud, snow, ice, and drought. Plenty of fresh air and quiet. Our life is sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes joyous, but never boring.

Absolutely love your post today. I have a thing for barns. Loved our barn on the farm where I was brought up. Have a barn book named “The Barns of Tennesee” from my daughter and son-in-law, who moved there a few yrs. ago. And made a quilt of barns(need to finish that). When I was in kindergarden I remember going on a short trip with the school (one room school). We were in a bus and passed a broken barn and I said, “OH that poor barn” the group got a good laugh out of that. So thanks for the memories – again!

So true, Suzanne. Barns can conjure up wonderful memories and smells. I loved the smell of a hayloft.

I love the old barns and silos. They have so much character than a Morton building. Your pictures are beautiful. I must say our very brown winter has not made for good photography.

Even the Amish don’t build them like this anymore and they still have the livestock and hay needs that farmers did in the past.
I have a nice little red one with a pond behind it and hills in the background I like to glance at on my way to and from work. You may remember it Suzanne. I like to think of it as MY barn.LOL!

I think old barns are good for the soul. They remind us of the beauty of necessary things, rooted in the earth and standing alone to do their duty.

These are beautiful pictures…I love how open and sparse the prairie looks, especially in the winter. It’s a simple kind of beauty!

Old barns remind us that we can age gracefully. They have so much character. Don’t you wish you could hear their stories? Beautiful pictures in a beautiful place. xx

The old barns stand like silent sentinels upon their stark and empty fields
Forever guarding treasure troves of ancient memories.
    Lovely expressive photos, Suzanne.
