Sparkling Clean Calf

I marvel every spring just how clean our cows can get their calves.

It’s not like they can throw their kids into a bathtub, all they’re doing is licking them clean. But just look at the results.

All these pics are of Eunice’s calf, born March 10.

Eunice must have some sort of magic cleaning agent in her spit.

And at 3 1/2 weeks old, her little calf’s diet is milk alone, but he’s starting to mimic his mama by mouthing plants and nosing around the grain trough.

It won’t be too many more weeks before the calves start grazing, but they’ll continue to nurse from their mamas until we wean them next fall.

Have a Blessed Day everyone!

What a pretty little calf with it’s big brown eyes and long eyelashes! I love your cow names. Eunice…Perfect! xx

Very shiny coat from that magic spit. Very pretty boy. Is it a boy?

    • Suzanne says:

Not sure. At this age you’d have to get down on the ground and peek up between their legs. They wouldn’t put up with that kind of nonsense. 🙂

Oh! I just want to hug one! (of course, that probably wouldn’t end well, huh?) 🙂

    • Suzanne says:

First, you’d have to catch one. They run like little racehorses. But if you manage to corner and hug one, it’s mama and probably every other cow in the pasture would be all over you like white on rice. It wouldn’t be pretty. 😮

When I read your comment about a magic cleaning agent in Eunice’s spit, I remembered this article my daughter posted on FB this week. Maybe there’s something to it.

It makes some sense to me until they get to the feeding your baby part. When pigs fly.

Hmmmm…but the feeding the baby part makes sense to me too.. Not that this will appear as a blog post here, but guess where calves get the enzymes they need to be able to digest grass? They eat their mom’s poop. Yes, they will eat some of their mom’s manure, ingest the necessary digestive enzymes, and for the rest of their lives they’ll be able to digest grass. Gross, but it’s natures way. :p
