Summer Bison Video

I am so far behind on showing you video and pics I’ve taken over the last few weeks! While I was bringing you all our vacation photos other things piled up in my picture and video file. So for the next few days, I’m playing catch-up.

Remember the last time we went down to the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve about a month ago?

I did a blog post about the bison and all the new baby calves, but didn’t show you the video I got too. I took this video on June 16. It was nice and green then, but we were there again this past weekend and it has been really hot and dry there so the grasses have browned quite a bit. Didn’t see the bison this past weekend.

But here they are from back in June:

(Be sure to have your speakers turned up so you can hear the prairie birds, and in the last clip you can hear the bison bull breathing as he grazes.)

.

.

Did you hear the bison in the last clip breathing?  Pretty cool huh? They must have some big lungs to make that much noise.

Have a great day all!

Cattle, corn, wheat, beans, mud, snow, ice, and drought. Plenty of fresh air and quiet. Our life is sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes joyous, but never boring.

Wow, you must have been pretty close to capture the bison bull breathing! Amazing they grow so large just grazing on plants.
I wonder what they eat besides grass?

  2. That is beautiful footage…so peaceful…loving the sunset! Those little babies are so sweet…I love how they are frolicking about! By the way, my 10 year old son watched this with me and he said “man, whoever filmed this is a professional!” How sweet is that compliment!

Bison video was great, loved watching the calves with their mommas, but what I loved most of all was hearing the birdies’ chorus in the background during the whole video! Thanks, Suzanne. 🙂

Suzanne, I wonder how the bison can stand the heat? With a winter coat on, I would be breathing heavy too! This will be as close, as I will ever be, to a bison! Thanks.

    • Suzanne says:

I guess Bison are so suited to their environment that the heat doesn’t seem to bother them as much. Our cattle shade up through the hottest part of the day, but bison don’t even seek out shade at all, and just keep on grazing. Amazing animals and so glad to see them back where they belong.

Don’t you think that maybe that heavy coat actually keeps them from feeling so much of the sun’s heat? God made sure everything was just right for all his creations.

    • Suzanne says:

And their coat is pretty good for keeping the pests at bay too, it’s just too thick for the bugs to get access to their skin.
