Cutting, Pinning, Sewing

This week Harland received his vest in the mail, and I got him a pocket watch for his new vest pocket. His pants have been hemmed, and so he’s ready for the ball.

Me? I’m getting there. I’ve been working on my dress: cutting out both the fashion fabric and lining (the dress is fully lined). I made my own piping that will go around the neckline, sleeves, and bottom edge of the bodice. Last night I sewed all seven panels of the skirt together and tonight after work plan on making gathers at the waist and working on the waistband. There’s so much material I told Harland I feel like I’m making bed sheets.

I’ve yet to start on the bodice of the dress because I don’t have my corset and the bodice needs to be fitted with me wearing the corset.  But – I just heard from my corset maker this morning that it is to be shipped (along with my bloomers and under-petticoat) today.

Yay!!

So I should have it in a few days and I then can finally get my dress done. Whew!

Please do post pictures of you and Harland dressed for the ball, and of the ball itself. It sounds fascinating. Gathering the skirt reminds me of when I made a bedskirt – gathering forever.

I’ve been wondering how it’s going…you must be quite the seamstress, to tackle this dress! Can’t wait to see it. And oh yes…have fun! 🙂

You are amazing! I cannot sew very well so I cannot wait to see this!

Fascinating! I used to make gathered cotton skirts to wear in the late fifties. It was one of the first things I learned to make when I was about 10 or 12. My mother taught me to gather it in sections, since a skirt had 4 yards in it. Nothing is as disappointing as having it almost all gathered and have the thread to break! I can’t wait to see your finished outfit. I can’t imagine wearing all those clothes!

I can maybe resew a button back on so I am very envious as well as anxious to see the finished project!

I can sew but to this day cannot put in a zipper. Suzanne, does yours have buttons or what for closures? Too many layers for me glad I didn’t live back then. So exciting to be going to the Ball.

The closure in the back is hooks and eyes. They hadn’t invented the zipper yet so you should have been born in that time period. 😉
