A Few Odds and Ends

Today, a few pics of the cows and their calves that I took a while back:

Grazing is more fun with a buddy. Did you know cows have friends they hang out with?

I was walking along the fencerow and startled this calf who ran away from me. Check out those back legs and feet. They can kick and if they make contact with you, they can leave a mark. Those little hooves strike like lightning and you won’t see it coming.

A little group of calves hanging out:

Here, the cow on the left is washing her baby, while the cow on the right is doing that head nuzzling thing with her baby. So cute! It’s a hug between mama and baby.

Did you know cows will clean each other? Here, the cow on the right cleans a dirty spot on her neighbor.

Ahhhh…..   It feels good to do a little stretching after a nap.

Less than 24 hours old, this little calf enjoys a gallop….

much to the chagrin of his mother who trots along behind trying to keep up.

Later we settle down for a little rest. Calves spend most of their first couple days resting.

Cattle, corn, wheat, beans, mud, snow, ice, and drought. Plenty of fresh air and quiet. Our life is sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes joyous, but never boring.

So many things in this post sound so familiar! Our cows clean each other while they’re in their stalls in the barn. I’ve been kicked by those little hooves, and it’s not fun! And the stretching…Jim always says that’s a sign of a healthy calf…if it stretches when it stands up! 🙂

Those are the cutest pics! Such darling little faces, although I know they can be little pills! Or big pills-LOL You take such great photos and it cracked me up to think of Harland with the snake. My husband hates snakes but they don’t bother me so much. I can’t imagine him seeing one in the bathroom-makes me laugh just to think about it 🙂

You’ve probably seen this a million times, but for me, it was a first. Our first cow, with her first calf, was set outside. She followed that little baby everywhere. When she stopped to graze, and Baby decided to try running. Mama looked up and chased after her…downhill. Baby heard hooves coming, got scared, and ran faster. Mama sped up. Farmer Girl started worrying about a crash at the bottom of the hill…but they pulled out of it in time! -whew-

And you can just hear the cow’s thoughts as she trots her 1000 pound body after her light-as-air calf: “Don’t run dear, don’t run, you’ll attract attention to yourself- predators are watching…you’ll hurt yourself…don’t run dear.” It makes them so nervous, especially first time mamas. 🙂
