Spring Cattle Move – Part 2
If you missed Part 1 of our annual Spring Cattle Move, you can catch up HERE. Go on, we’ll wait for you.
So once the calves were unloaded and reunited with the cows, we gave them about an hour to find each other in the crowd, hugs all around, and some much needed nursing after the long separation.
“Get to it Junior – my bag is ENORMOUS!”
“Num num num num….”
And then the best time of the day, no – the best part of the year for the cattle – and for us: The release into the pasture.
It’s time to open the gate:
Finally, after months of close contact with the pesky humans, eating dry hay, enduring the cold winds and snow of winter, and then giving birth to 80 pound babies, the cows have all summer ahead of them to do as they please – away from the humans. They’ll eat green grass, lay in the shade on hot summer days, and drink cool water. The calves will start to eat grass, and they’ll grow and grow.
And it’s a welcome vacation for us too. The rush of calving season that has gone on for the last few months is over. No more feeding hay, no more worrying about cows calving at 2:00am on cold snowy nights, no more reaching inside cow’s backsides to pull out a calf .
It’s summertime – and the living is easy.
