New Siding Project – Part 4

Day before yesterday, Harland filled in the trench for the electric line. Good thing he was able to do that when he did as it has rained twice since then, or maybe 3 times, I’ve lost count. At any rate, the yard is a muddy mess now. But Harland forged ahead yesterday and in between rain showers, he and his brother Gerald put in the forms for the front sidewalk and patio.

After the patio is poured, another sidewalk will be framed and poured that will run from the front door alongside the patio and out to the shed.

And remember our puzzlement about this space under the foundation?

After some brainstorming, we’ve decided it’s probably an old cistern or acetylene tank that would have been used for an early lighting system. Looks like they had filled it in and some settling occurred afterward leaving a gap.

Harland is going to fill it in with concrete today.

He’s also going to lay some gravel in the sidewalk and patio area as a base for the concrete.

Later, when the mud dries out, he’ll bring in the tractor with the bucket and move some of our yard away from the patio so rainwater will run away from that side of the house from now on.

More to come….

Jeepers creepers talk about major construction. Hopefully the weather will hold this weekend for him to maybe get close to getting done. Gardens still look in tact. Take care. Sending sunny thoughts!!

For heavens sake I just lost my post, hit something by accident and it was gone. Suzanne I wanted to tell you our wires have been buried in our neighborhood for over forty years. We have had only one problem with water getting to the wires, once a contractor dug up something and we lost the cable service. You are so lucky Harland is a keeper, you better get out in that kitchen and rattle some pots and pans! Seriously I could use another pie recipe if you might have an extra laying around. : – ))

The project is really moving right along. You will enjoy the new patio alot. You better order a glider and patio umbrella.

There’s a lot of work to be done yet – hope the rain holds off for the cement work!

One could imagine all kinds of scenarios that would explain that hole under the foundation…but an old cistern certainly makes sense! We still have one that is in operation. It’s been a life saver on occasion, when the well pump goes out! Gives us enough water to keep the cows happy while the plumber does his thing!

Rain seems to wait for remodelling projects upon which to dump its bounty, doesn’t it ?~! Love the new patio location and it will be such a great space in the warmer months. Husbands who are competent are so wonderful to have around. I’ve had mine for nearly thirty years and am still learning from him how to do projects and work stuff around the home and land.

Just think of all the new planting ideas you can come up with around the patio….. Makes my mind just wander…..

That’s quite the project you have going on. Saving money with Harland doing it. It’s nice to have a husband whose skilled in the work needed done. My husband does some repair work as well, including oil changes, cleaning gutters. Will be working on tne roof nexg year, , ost likely. Look forward to the finished photos. I’m sure you are for sure. Good job, Harland!
