First Calf Of The Year

A couple of weeks ago, we had our first calf. Calving, for us, starts in early March, and goes on through mid-April.  This little guy was born the day before I took these pics.

For the first couple days, they sleep most of the time.

It’s very tiring to be born.

Usually, I can’t get this close to a newborn calf. But in this case, mama cow simply walked away when I approached, and watched me from about 15 feet away.  She’s a young cow, and rather timid. But an older cow stood guard over the calf, keeping an eye on the pesky human.

You don’t have to speak “cow”, to know what she is saying. She outweighs me by about 900 lbs, so I didn’t stick around.

Cattle, corn, wheat, beans, mud, snow, ice, and drought. Plenty of fresh air and quiet. Our life is sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes joyous, but never boring.
