Mary Had A Little Lamb

Mary had a little lamb,
whose fleece was white as snow.
And everywhere that Mary went,
the lamb was sure to go.

It followed her to school one day
which was against the rules.
It made the children laugh and play,
to see a lamb at school.

And so the teacher turned it out,
but still it lingered near,
And waited patiently about,
till Mary did appear.

“Why does the lamb love Mary so?”
the eager children cry.
“Why, Mary loves the lamb, you know.”
the teacher did reply.

First published in 1830, Mary Had A Little Lamb was based on the true story of a young girl named Mary Sawyer who owned a pet lamb. One day, at the urging of her brother, she took the lamb to school and the ensuing chaos inspired Sarah Hale to write this poem.

Cattle, corn, wheat, beans, mud, snow, ice, and drought. Plenty of fresh air and quiet. Our life is sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes joyous, but never boring.

I love that poem. It was the first song I learned to play on the cello. I also never knew the real ending.

In unrelated news, I tried your Honey Wheat Bread recipe yesterday and everyone agrees that it’s a keeper. I love the way it turned out. I think next week I might try the no knead herb bread.

  3. Suzanne, I forgot to tell you…I tried your no knead herb bread and it was awesome!!!! Even my kids love it! It was the easiest recipe for bread ever! This is now one of my favorite bread recipes and I will be using it from now on. I want to experiment with different herbs and even some slivers of sun dried tomato…oh ya! so glad you posted it!
